Memorabilia — Use It or Lose It!

What do you do with those special items that have been passed down to you? Put them in the hall closet and hope the door will shut? Probably not a good choice for several reasons. First, you are unnecessarily creating clutter; second, if the item is very old and unstable, you will further the aging process; finally, and most importantly, what’s the point of keeping these special items if the only time you enjoy them is when you move or get the bug to clean out a closet!

This summer my grandmother passed away and I was the recipient of many beautiful things, especially table linens. My grandmother enjoyed entertaining and her tables were always draped in an impeccable manner. As I started to sort through everything to see what I actually had, I found napkin-sized linens on which my grandmother had painted picnic scenes. They are so neat and I could not just stick them back in a closet for another 50 years.

But the dilemma was, what should I do with them? They were too precious to actually use as table linens, so I decided to have them framed to display in my daughter’s room. I visited a local frame shop only to discover a vast range of options for preserving any and all types of mementos. For my project, the shop owner recommended conservation framing. The linens were very old and starting to discolor. The conservation frame process includes hand-stitching the fabric to a suede board, use of acid free mattes (very important because acid from papers and plastics can migrate onto your memento), and image perfect UV-filtering glass. The painted napkins turned out wonderfully and look great in my daughter’s room. Now, every time I am in there making the bed or putting away laundry, I am reminded of my grandmother’s big heart and gentle smile.

My Aunt Marcia has a particular knack for finding creative solutions for our family heirlooms. When my grandfather’s health was failing, he always had a hand-stitched quilt over his shoulders for warmth. Family members had a very strong association between that quilt and my grandfather. After his death my aunt had the quilt taken apart and the pieces of fabric made into teddy bears for grandchildren and doilies for his daughters and daughters-in-law. In addition, a frame was presented to my dad containing his father’s Bronze Star, the Executive Order, and the article from the newspaper, all arranged under glass using conservation techniques.

Many mementos are suitable for display, given the appropriate treatment. Things that may be considered include, but are not limited to: garments worn for a special occasion, a lone piece of china or silver, and special awards or medals. There are many conservation or preservation solutions available. Costs will vary depending on the size and detail of the project, but consider it a worthwhile investment in the preservation of a small piece of your family history. So run, don’t walk, to your attic, closet or wherever you have hidden away a precious memento and find a way to put it on display now!

Act of Courage

“To get the little things done is an act of courage. Courage to know and not be afraid – that the little things will lead to the big things – and you accomplish them too.”

Marilyn Kay Snyder

Courage

Courage to Change

Jump in front of the bus to save your child’s life!

Chase down a mugger to save your Mother’s purse!

Go Parachuting or swim with the sharks!

We think we’re hot stuff, don’t we?

How about this one…………………. Change your life and follow your dreams?

What are we afraid of? Part of it but we are so afraid of our “can we do it?” doubts, that we stuff it down even further. Give yourself a chance. Ask yourself the tough questions. Are you happy with what you are doing with your life? If you had the chance to change anything, would you? Do you have a real passion for what you are doing, or are you just doing it? Do you avoid thinking about things as much as possible because you don’t want to face your own actions or inactions? Be courageous. Ask. You will be surprised at how much you will be relieved that you asked. You will find out that it isn’t as scary after all. Be courageous. Take charge of your life.

Courage to start

You plan. You plan some more. You plan and plan some more. You want is that we take too much time to think. You think yourselves right out of any action. There is this excuse and that reason that you should not go ahead with trying to achieve your dream. When you do that, you are focusing on the wrong thing. You are not focusing on the outcome. You are not focusing on your vision, on your desire. People that concentrate on looking at the problems can’t get past them because that is all they see. They don’t see the mountain top, they see the long climb. They don’t see the finish line; they see all the miles they need to run to get there.

Look at the goal. Focus on the desire and take courage with you. This way you won’t worry about the obstacles you encounter. With courage, you will work through them and accomplish your dream.

Courage to question

Ask yourself what you want to do in life. Then…….take the time to listen to your answer. Often times we know deep down what we want to do with our life,

you have to give – to today.

The best way to free your mind from worry about tomorrow is to take action about today’s problems. Notes due at the bank? Call them up right now and talk to them about renewing the not or paying partial down and renewing the rest. Income flow a little low right now? Make the necessary adjustments in your living standards until your income level has changed. Get your financial house in order today. Taking action will get rid of the worry today.

Worrying about your job? If you are unhappy with it, lay out plans to change it. Need to go back to school to get the job you want, but you don’t know if it will work? Sit down right now with a pen and paper and figure out how to make it work. Call someone at the school. Call a friend that is helpful and objective. Find someone that you know that can help you outline a plan. Do it to make sure you don’t mess anything up. You want to make sure you do everything perfect. You want to make sure of………….of what? Nothing is sure. Nothing is perfect except God above. Something will always go wrong. So now that you know that, get it out of your mind and get going. What is the worse that can happen? If something goes wrong, fix it. If something isn’t a sure thing, have a back up contingency. The person who starts, makes mistakes, and keeps going, is the one who will eventually cross the finish line. The one who continually plans and reviews and researches will look up one day and see that the boat has left the dock without them.

Courage to not worry

Live each day making the most of the day’s opportunities. If you worry about tomorrow you are taking time away from living today, solving today’s problems, and seizing today’s opportunities. This is not being careless or indifferent about tomorrow. This is about giving all that

step. Do the small act. You are moving. Without the courage to actually take the action every day, toward your goals, you will never see them. You know the story about the tortoise and the hare? It isn’t so much as who made it first; it is the fact that they were both moving. We never hear the story of the tortoise and the rock, do we? The rock doesn’t move, so what’s the point of the story. The rock isn’t ever going to see the finish line. If you act and you fail, so what. You have learned something, you know it didn’t kill you and it made you stronger. The courage to act is the one that is going to get you to the top of the mountain.

O’Henry tells the story of the New York artist who planned a great masterpiece. His picture was to be colossal. Those who heard him tell his plans were thrilled by the conception. It would send his name echoing forever before you go to sleep tonight. Action always is stronger than worry.

Courage to change the lives of others

Courageous people pull others along with them. If you act with courage you have no idea the people who will look at your example and it will give them hope and courage also. You will never know all of the people whose lives you will have touched. The checker at your grocery store, who finds out what you are doing with your life, will say to himself, “If they can do that, I can do what I need to do also.” Your hairdresser will tell her friend, and they will have a good conversation about your courage, and it will help the friend be courageous in something she needs to do. A family member who has always wanted to try something will say, “If my sister or brother can do that, well, I guess I can give my idea a try!” Your courage for you will be as power for them.

Courage to Action – every day

Take the little step. It is at least a down the ageless corridors of time. It would make of him a companion of the immortal Da Vinci, the magnificent Rembrandt.

But he couldn’t start the picture today. Things weren’t right. A touch of rheumatism. A gloomy day. Bad light. So it went, until one day his friends found him dead in bed. They took up his lifeless body and buried his masterpiece with him.

Will your masterpiece be buried with you? Do you not know that “someday” will never come? Do you not realize that as you lay your head on your pillow tonight, you have closed the door on another day, never for it to be opened again? There is no second chance on your time. Be courageous. Step out into the world right now and give your light to others to show them the way.

Why Do Some Affirmations *Work* - and Others Don’t?

By definition,an affirmation is a statement repeated time and
again either verbally or mentally-or written down. The words
of the affirmation statement - in themselves -when spoken,
thought of, or written *without* a pictorial (visualized) or
emotional connection- make a very weak affirmation.

Affirmations, when worded correctly — and when emotionally
charged - are able to tap into the unlimited creative power of
your subconscious mind, and manifest your desires.

Affirmations are not all created equal. Some are, of course,
better than others.
When you examine the structure of these power affirmations, you,
too, can learn how to create your own powerful affirmations for
your specific purposes.

Consider these:
“I am what I choose to be.”
“All my needs are met instantaneously.”
“I love and accept myself exactly as I am.”
“_____________ comes to me easily and effortlessly.”
(Fill in the blank with what you desire.)
“I am now perfectly healthy in body, mind and spirit.”
“I now create my wonderful, ideal life.”
What do the above power affirmations have in common?

1) They’re stated in the present tense.

An affirmation is more effective when stated in the present
tense. For example;”I now have a wonderful job.” Avoid affirming
something in the future tense, e.g.”I am going to have a
wonderful job” or the results will always be waiting to happen.

2) They express a positive statement.

Affirmations need to be stated in the most positive terms
possible. Avoid negative statements. Affirm what you do want,
rather than what you don’t want. For example:”I am no longer
sick.” This is a negative statement. Instead, affirm: :”I am now
perfectly healthy in body, mind and spirit.” This statement is
much more powerful as it is positive and reinforces your desired
goal and doesn’t confuse your subconscious mind with the mention
of the undesirable condition.

3) They’re short and specific.
Short affirmations have a far greater impact
at the subconscious level than those which are long and wordy.
Keeping them specific and to the point adds power as the idea is
uncluttered by extraneous elements.

The mechanics that make affirmations powerful are:

* Repetition
The importance of repetition cannot be overemphasized. It
imprints the affirmation into your subconscious mind.

*Emotions
Get involved, be passionate, and use your emotions. Think
carefully about the meaning of the words as you repeat them
rather than just writing, typing or saying them.

*Persistence
Practicing affirmations with persistence achieves results much
sooner than practicing them periodically.Successive sessions
will have a compounding effect.

*Belief
You don’t necessarily have to believe your affirmation initially,
in order for it to work. Belief will grow with your forthcoming
successes. What you do need is the ability to *feel* what it
would be like when the desire you’re affirming is fulfilled, or
your need met. Every time that you have a need -and that need
is met -a certain “feeling” is produced in you.
Simply evoke that same feeling when you state your affirmation.
That is, you need to feel with every fiber of your being that what you desire has already happened. Without this feeling, your
affirmation is powerless.

*Impress Yourself
Personalize your affirmations. They must *resonate* with you feel right for you. The stronger your connection with the
affirmation, the deeper the impression it makes on your mind and
the sooner you will experience positive results.

So there you have it - the simple formula for creating
affirmations that work. Based on the above, you can easily
create your own affirmations to manifest any desire or need you
have in life.

TIP: Although the practice of affirmations is easy, some people
find it challenging to repeat the affirmations continuously while
maintaining the highly charged emotional state necessary in
making affirmations work. GOOD NEWS!You can now use your
computer to make the affirmation process effortless-and
you can automate those challenging aspects (such as maintaining
highly charged emotions),thereby manifesting your desires more
quickly!

Brief history of Russian Samovar

It is hard to imagine Russian tea drinking tradition
without samovars used.

So, how and when Samovars was designed?

Historical predecessors of samovars are usual brass-made teapots.
They was very popular at ancient china and probably, it was mongols or other
eastern tribes who have bring them to Russia.

But, main disadvantage of that teapots was - hot water quickly cooled.

At 18th century first known devices which looks like samovars appeared.
It was usual teapot with metal tube inside. Tube was heated by burned charcoal -
so water inside teapot remained hot.

Next, special device called “Kuhnya” (Kitchen) appeared - simple device to prepare food on open air.
It was the same teapot - but for making “Shi” and “Kasha” inside of it.

Tea was not popular at that times - because of price of tea, which was exported from China.

But, due to conquer of Siberia tea became less expencive and Russian tea drinking tradition have began.

At that times (18th century also) Russian “Kuhnya” device was changed to prepare not only “Shi” and “Kasha”
but also to keep hot water for tea inside.
“Kuhnya” was divided on 3 sections - one for “Shi” one for “Kasha” and one for Hot water

Next step was to divide devices - so Samovar appeared - just for making tea.

Who loves you?

The journey from the Earth to the Moon is one of the pivotal events in the history of the human race. The words, “A small step for man, a giant leap for mankind”, uttered by Astronaut Neil Armstrong on taking his first step on the Moon are instantly recognized around the world.

In our relationships, when faced with making a commitment and showing our true feelings it’s very much like making a journey to the Moon. The debate rages around fear of commitment and who says what first. Tremendous energy, time and space is being dedicated to analyzing when to say “I love you” and what to do depending on the other persons response. There are even strategies for trying to say “I love you”, without actually saying it! These three little words are so loaded with meaning, that after saying “I love you”, we might as well add, “three small words for mankind, a giant leap for me…” Once you say these three magic words the world does indeed change for the two people involved.

If it’s such a difficult thing to say and has such consequences, then why do people continue to say it? The answer is that the basis for a true romantic relationship is sincere and mutual commitment. We all have a fundamental need to be loved, a love that is beyond the love of parents, siblings and friends. Everybody needs to be loved and to love somebody. The sum of the creative works of humanity is a testament to mankind’s need for love.

The problem arises when one or both of the people in a relationship are not in love with each other. If they can be honest with themselves and each other, then they can establish that the basis of the relationship is something other than love and avoid making a commitment. If people could do this and easily have relationships without love, then most of the relationship advice industry would very quickly run out of work. The reality is that at least one person in every relationship thinks that the relationship is based on love or atsome pointhas the chance of being so.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on your point of view, there is no easy way to get around saying “I love you”, unless one is great liar or an Oscar winning actor. If in doubt, you can try saying the following lines while looking in the mirror and feel the truth for yourself:

“I like you”
“You mean so much to me”
“I really like you”
“You make feel special”

“I love you”

Feel the difference? The truth has a resonance that is very difficult to fake and, when it comes to love, you can bet everybody’s senses are tuned in at maximum sensitivity. When you are ready and truly say “I love you” to somebody this entails many things. To mention a few implications, it’s expected that you’re sincere, that you’ll be faithful and that you’ve given this matter some thought. Your statement is said with conviction about your feelings and in the hope that the other person can reciprocate your love, but it is by no means an expectation or obligation on the other person. This is the scary part about love, the fear of saying “I love you” and then hearing a very long and painful silence afterwards. The fear of this results in many people never being able to say what they feel.

For those people who are truly in love, not saying “I love you” to their loved one leaves them feeling empty and unfulfilled. Sometimes it’s not the response that’s important but the conviction which enables one to say “I love you”. The belief that you have found the right person and to have the emotion of love flowing in your heart is a feeling that’s central to the meaning of life and for many worth the risk of unrequited love. As St. Augustine said, “Better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all”.

Who loves you? The answer is simple; it’s the person who has the conviction to say “I love you” and then lives up to all that these three words entail.

Carbon nanotubes ring alarm bells for the HSE

Recent research has indicated that Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) may be hazardous to health. In a paper published by Nature Nanotechnology, it has been noted that the CNTs share many of their properties with asbestos fibres, and there is a risk that they may be harmful to human health.

In response to the new findings, the HSE has asked for a precautionary approach to be used when working with these molecules, although it understands that the use of CNTs cannot be completely avoided due to their commercial value.

The worrying traits that the CNTs have shown are their resemblance in shape to the asbestos fibres and their ability to stick in the lungs of the animals when inhaled. According to the HSE, the use of these molecules cannot be stopped outright, but until further research shows that they are not harmful, the use will have to be minimised and controlled.

Keep up-to-date with health and safety regulations that can save employees from serious injury and avoid court procedures that can cost companies many thousands of pounds. Visit the Workplace Law website and find out about enrolling your staff onto the iosh working safely course which can help your company avoid falling foul of health and safety legalities.

CNTs are forms of carbon, which are manufactured by alterations on the molecular scale. Single-walled (SWCNTs) and multi-walled (MWCNTs) are two major groups of CNTs that have been discovered so far. The substance comes in several chemical compositions - it either can be purely made of carbon or may contain metals and other materials. It has also been found to be several times stronger than steel, and yet significantly lighter than it.

The HSE is of the view that though CNTs themselves have not yet raised great alarm, but their likeness to asbestos necessitates scrutiny. Until proper research has been conducted to resolve the matter, precautions should be taken in terms of risk management. HSE has advised that CNTs should be clearly labelled as ‘Caution: substance not yet fully tested’ until all the potential hazards have been analysed.

What Do You Prefer the Spanish Lottery or the Euro Lotto

In December 2008 e-lotto brought the Spanish National lotto to it’s product range, giving players globally a vastly improved chance of sharing in this giant Spanish lottery prize fund.

If this is the first time you have come across the Spanish Lotto, allow me to highlight simply how crucial this lotto is to the large majority of the Spanish population. The Spanish lottery has been a public obsession in Spain for a long time with massive interest generated by the Christmas lotto draw every year. Believe it or not 98% of the population play this Spanish National lotto each and every Christmas.

There are a few basic reasons why lots of Spanish nationals join in the Christmas Elgordo lotto draw.

First Off, on that point is the incentive of the largest lotto prize fund of any international lotto game - 2.20 Billion Euros! Secondly, there are in excess of thirteen thousand cash prizes to be won. Lastly, the probability of picking up a cash prize in the Christmas lotto draw is a highly feasible - one in six.

With the quantity of interest thats given to the Christmas El Gordo lottery draw, lots of people are oblivious that there is 5 additional Spanish Lotto draws each year as well. These lotto games take place on January, March, May, July and November. While these five lottery games don’t feature the whopping prize fund of the Christmas lotto draw, they are sizable nonetheless, ranging from 78 million Euros to 655 million Euros. Also, these lottery games provide nearly three times as many prizes as the Christmas lottery draw and betting odds of collecting a money prize of an awesome one in three.

The Christmas Spanish lottery works in a different way to almost all other worldwide lotteries. A whole lotto ticket ‘billete’ is very dear, costing two hundred Euros. However, these lotto tickets are divided up into ten ‘decimos’ (tenths) costing 20 Euros each.

When purchasing your lotto tickets you have the option of buying 1 decimo, a complete lotto ticket, or a portion of a lotto ticket. If you don’t buy the full lottery ticket, someone else will purchase the remainder of your lottery ticket. For Instance, when you buy 2 decimos, someone else purchases 3 decimos and someone else purchases five and your lottery ticket wins one thousand Euros, then you will collect 200 Euros, 300 Euros and 500 Euros respectively. Owing to the expense of purchasing an entire ticket, it is not uncommon for households and acquaintances to united their lotto money and each purchase a separate ‘decimo’ 10th.
