Kitchen Tables - Not Just For Dinner Anymore

Kitchen tables are the throwback from yesteryear. From a time when people would congregate in the kitchen to enjoy the company and warmth. To all sit down at the table and enjoy the daily feast with the family. They would all sit together to enjoy the meal and discuss all the events of the day. Today, the kitchen table is making a comeback. It may be the family gathering for a meal or friends gathered to chat and snack along the way.

Kitchen tables in a variety of sytles and shapes are now being made to fit almost every space, budget and lifestyle. From the farmhouse traditional cermaic tile top to the elegant granite countertop tables, all are ready in a variety of sizes and styles. You can buy a durable laminated table top or go for the timeless look of wood. There are many wood types to choose from and a variety of finishes available for you today.

The table was originally a place for family meals but has since become a place where people can just socialize around food. Friends come to visit are looking for that home type feel that comes with sitting and chatting in the kitchen. This arrangement also keeps the cook involved with the guests and allows everyone to join in the work. Food preparation is indeed a time of friendship and socializing.

You want to have a table that is inviting to your friends and family. You also want your table to be sized the way you need it. Too large a table isn’t as inviting as a small one. Make sure you have enough space for your family and a few extras just in case. And remember your table is more then just a place to eat your meal.

Abigail Franks writes on a variety of subjects such as home, family, and health. For more information on kitchen tables visit us at http://www.kitchentable.fixituptoday.com

Ah! Colorful Beautiful Creatures - Wait, You Got to be Certified to Scuba Dive

Scuba Diving is one wonderful relaxing out of the world experience. How many hours have you seen the best camera footage in Discovery and national geographic and wondered what would it be like to be there physically? Atleast for me the TV time amounts roughly to 200 hours an year. Let me give an analogy for the experience you get. Have you had the relaxing 3 hours in a private beach with a towel on your eyes facing the mild sun and warm breeze in a tropical back-drop? How was it? Did you forget all the worries on the world, Scuba Diving just offers the same experience but just 10 times more rewarding? What makes this a more exciting “hobby” is the number of diving sites in the world. And the endless unique aquatic life each site has. It is never boring and in a while you may decide you are born in this world just for this. I have heard a lot of stories where people who started this as a pass-time have ended up in full time conservation and preservation efforts. Some others are documenting the different creatures and getting paid for the same. If you have photography skills the possibilities are endless.

There are a few folks who don’t prepare for stuff they are going to do and end in helpless situation. Folks take their kids and family with the assumption if you know how to swim you can scuba dive. Well you are dealing with diving at good depths. This is high pressure game; you got to be in good health and should be physically fit for this experience. Along with that you should exhibit your sufficient knowledge to operate the scuba diving equipments. You are going to carry new equipments at places where the time to react is counted in seconds. So you will not be permitted to dive unless you hold the certification. This is done for your own safety. The certification process is a wonderful experience itself. You have a learning session and then a few pool sessions. At the end you should pass monitored some diving sessions. The whole process sometimes takes just 3 weekends. For people with a week you can learn a lot about scuba diving and get certified in just this one week.

There are many places where you can get certified and start this out of the world experience. You start out learning about the equipment and study materials. This sometimes could be done online mostly. The next phase is pool sessions with certified instructors. The next phase is the real diving tests. There may be many phases or sessions based on where you join and your requirements. Get certified; dive down to depths to get high on a rewarding experience. Don’t miss out on this interesting, rewarding and good experience.

Use Your Youth To Your Advantage

You should wait until you’re older and have more business and real-world experience before starting a business. You should just focus on school for now. Nobody will take you seriously at this age.

You’ll hear all these reasons–and more–about why you shouldn’t start a business from your friends, your parents, your advisors and many others who only have your best intentions at heart. But before you start believing what you hear, take a moment to think to yourself, What would have happened if somebody had told these arguments to and convinced:

  • Bill Gates who left Harvard to start Microsoft
  • Michael Dell who left the University of Texas to start Dell
  • Milton Hershey who opened his first candy shop when he was 18
  • Fred Smith who, while attending Yale, received a “C” on his Fedex business plan and decided to start his business anyway
  • Steve Jobs who left Reed University to start Apple
  • William Hewlett and David Packard who started HP out of a garage after graduating from Stanford
  • Or the thousands of other young people who have started a business and been successful

Imagine the potential that would have been stifled if these visionaries hadn’t started businesses when they were young! Imagine how our world would have been different without an HP, a Dell, a Microsoft, a Fedex, a Hersheys or an Apple.

Young entrepreneurs are not anomalies. Below are six ways that youthful entrepreneurs have the cards tipped in their favor:

  1. It’s easier to exceed expectations and harder to not meet them. The fact that adults expect less from young people can be used to your advantage. It’s OK if you’re not perfectly polished. It will take less effort to please clients and make a name for yourself with the media.
  2. There’s little competition from other students. How many students do you know who are entrepreneurs? There are definitely not many, which makes your story more press-, scholarship-, competition-, client- and award-worthy. And remember, accomplishments that are incredible in college become less impressive as you get older.
  3. There are resources that support youthful endeavors. There are many nonprofit organizations and individuals that focus on or are more than willing to specifically support entrepreneurial youth. First on this list is your school, which probably has teachers who can assist you or who have contacts in the business community that can further your goals.
  4. You have an existing passive secondary stream of income. Students often have income coming in from their parents. Enen if it’s not consistent, then it’s at least something you know you can always fall back on. If you’re venture fails when you’re young, you probably won’t starve or lose your house in the process.
  5. There’s a synergy between your school and your business. The practical knowledge you learn from running your business can help your academic work and vice-versa. Some schools will allow you to earn academic credit from or do an independent study of your business. You can also base class projects on your business. That means, you might be able to create a marketing plan or develop new sales strategies or markets for your business on your “school time.”
  6. Your creativity is probably at a high point. Young people have a fresh perspective on the world. This perspective lends itself to seeing many opportunities that haven’t already been exploited. The founders of Microsoft, Yahoo, Dell and FedEx all saw unique opportunities and capitalized on them when they were still students.

Pay Yourself First

Schools do not teach thrift: college, high school, junior highour system doesn’t place a high priority on frugality. And what a shame. We should put money aside regularly using a simple system pay yourself first.

For example, when you pay your utility bill, pay yourself first. I’ve talked to people who have mastered saving money who have become very wealthy. Many of them have had to make tough choicespay the phone bill or savings account? All of them chose to pay themselves first. They got on the phone with the phone company to buy time and negotiate a payment plan. Figure out a way, but pay yourself always.

You must pay yourself first, or you’ll negotiate away your savings. You want to have at least six months of living expenses, liquid. Savings is money you set aside that you never spend. Ultimately, you’ll invest it, generate passive income and get out of the rat race.

Recommended savings
60% Long-term savings
20% Emergencies
optional % “Emotional” (vacation/car savings account) (optional)

Or another way to think about it…

10% Yourself
10% Tithe
10% Pay down any debt you have (and commit yourself to not run up more debt)
70% Do anything you want with it.

Once you get the ball rolling, you can shift your savings into a CD, then shift it again into something with stronger returns. Your initial goal is to live on 90 percent of your earnings. The average American lives on 110 percent of his earnings. You can do it.

Another, separate, prong of this saving strategy is to tithe another 10 percent. It could be given to your church, the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, or any other organization you’d like to benefit. In my opinion, we owe it to our community and each other to be responsible and giving stewards of our money and do good in the world. I encourage us all to incorporate tithing into our savings plan of action. Your generosity will come back to you.

Sweet Vanilla Crib Bedding by CoCaLo - A Product Review

CoCaLo is a relative newcomer to the crib bedding industry, founded in 1998. CoCaLo manufacturers crib bedding under the OshKosh Baby, Baby Martex, and Kimberly Grant labels. Under the Baby Martex label, the Sweet Vanilla collection is one of the unique bedding sets available. Most gender-neutral crib sets use green or blue, colors that most people can agree are relatively neutral. Sweet Vanilla uses the definition of neutral with cream, white and khaki colored bedding. Generally retailing for between $180 and $210, the four-piece crib set seems reasonably priced. Compared to competing crib bedding collections, Sweet Vanilla has a smaller number of coordinating accessories, but the neutral color scheme should make accessorizing relatively easy.

Sweet Vanilla comes as a four-piece crib set with a quilt, bumper, crib skirt, and fitted sheet. The collection is made from a 65/35 poly/cotton blend, with the exception of the fitted sheet, which is 100% cotton. None of the crib set pieces are available for purchase separately. As with most crib bedding collections, a number of accessories are available that match the Sweet Vanilla crib set. Notably missing, however, is a hamper, which most crib bedding manufacturers have available.

Sweet Vanilla’s main focus is texture. The quilt has five fabrics- corduroy, velvet, sherpa, waffle, and a fleece backing- all of which are on the quilt to make it touchable. You can’t help feeling the “wool” of the lamb or the velvet in the stars. I was happy to see that the quilt uses a genuine patchwork technique, instead of the more commonly used “printed” patchwork, in which the patchwork design is one piece of fabric with the patches sewn into it in order to create the effect. The genuine patchwork technique has each differently colored fabric and texture sewn into it’s own “patch”.

Some of the fabrics used on the quilt are printed fabrics, where the pattern is printed onto the fabric. Printed fabrics are a more cost-effective way to produce the variety of patterns commonly used in crib bedding, such as ginghams, plaids, and stripes. Woven fabrics are generally a higher quality than printed fabrics. Woven fabrics begin with individual colored threads woven together to create the pattern. I was slightly disappointed to see that Sweet Vanilla did not have the higher quality woven fabrics; I think that the variety of fabrics used and the genuine patchwork quilt more than make up for it.

The bumper is 9″ tall with ties on both the top and bottom. Rick-rack trim is used on the long sides of the bumper, while appliquéd moons, stars, and lambs appear on the head and foot of the bumper. A slight drawback of the bumper is the fact that it comes as one continuous piece, as opposed to being broken up into two, three, or even four pieces. The crib skirt has a 12″ drop to complete the look of the set. The fitted sheet has a striped pattern, which could possibly fade due to normal wear and tear. I would recommend buying several solid colored fitted sheets {white, off-white, or cream}, which are readily available at most bedding retailers, to save the matching sheet for showing off. Fortunately, all of the crib bedding pieces are machine washable.

Unfortunately for Canadian consumers purchasing from a United States online retailer, the Sweet Vanilla bedding collection is manufactured in China. Customers in Canada would be required to pay import duties of as much as 18% of the stated prices.

If you’re interested in the color scheme of Sweet Vanilla, you might also want to look at: Dream with Me by Glenna Jean and Verona by Lambs & Ivy.

Daily Basketball Betting Advice: Pistons-Hornets 1/10/06 Game of the Day

Tuesday’s best game will surprise you and that is the Piston-Hornets matchup. The blowout game should not necessarily surprise the avid basketball fan with Lebron going up against the Knicks.

Best: Pistons @ Hornets: The Hornets have won handily against San Antonio and Miami at home and this game should be a struggle for Detroit. Expect a sellout and raucous crowd to be against the Pistons, who haven’t shown up in games against weak opponents more than they do versus strong ones. The Pistons are coming into this game on a sliding note.Predicted Score: New Orleans/Oklahoma City wins in a shocker 101-98

Runner-up: Celtics @ Hawks: Is it even possible for any team to be swept by the Hawks? That’s what the Celtics face when they head into Atlanta having already suffered a pair of losses to Atlanta. It doesn’t say much for your playoff chances when you struggle to beat the Hawks. I have to imagine Paul Pierce will step up and lead them over Atlanta. Predicted Score: Boston wins on the road 113-108

Blowout: Knicks @ Cavaliers: The Knicks have done badly against teams that are flat-out stronger and more physical than they are. The smaller Knicks have PG-playing-SG Jamal Crawford defending LeBron James, which is a recipe for disaster. Predicted Score: Cleveland wins handily in a double digit blowout 109-94

Performance Reviews - Six Common Mistakes Made by Managers

Ask employees how supervisors and managers could improve the way they deliver performance reviews and you likely will get more responses then you can process. This is an area where most performance reviewers could improve. Let’s examine six common mistakes managers make when it comes to delivering performance reviews and how they can improve their delivery.

1. Being late-Timing is everything, particularly when it comes to reviews. Even positive reviews that are delivered late can have a negative impact on an employee’s morale.

Late reviews tell employees “I have more important things to do than provide you with feedback.” You don’t want to send that message to employees who are meeting expectations, and you certainly don’t want to send that message to your star performers. Re-adjust your plans and deliver reviews on time.

2. Using reviews to provide feedback for the first time-Picture this scenario: an employee is sitting at the edge of her chair waiting to receive what she believes will be a glowing review. Then, boom. Her manager cites five areas where her performance has been substandard. The employee sits in disbelief. After the first two comments, all she hears is “blah, blah, blah!”

This scenario happens everyday. Why? Too many supervisors and managers wait until review time to provide employees with any feedback. Tell employees how they are doing on a continuous basis so they know where they stand.

3. Winging it-Too many supervisors and managers fail to prepare properly for the performance review. They check some boxes on the form; write a few comments and send it off to the boss or human resources for final approval. Then it’s time for lunch.

Delivering a performance review requires more than filling out a performance appraisal form. Conducting a good review requires careful preparation. Decide what you are going to say, and how you are going to say it. Take your time when delivering the news, and put aside ample time to respond to the employee’s questions regarding your assessment.

4. Telling white lies-It’s not uncommon to sugar coat bad reviews. Some supervisors and managers believe they are doing employees a favor by sparing their feelings.

Employees can’t be expected to improve their performance if they have no idea they are failing. Be truthful. In the end, the employee will thank you.

5. Talking at the employee-Reviews are a great time to open dialogue between employees and their managers. It should not be a one-way conversation where managers are viewed as talking heads.

Train supervisors and managers on how to draw employees into the conversation. The ultimate goal is to provide feedback, and feedback should be a two-way communication.

6. Failing to plan for the future-Often times, supervisors and managers tell employees that they will meet again to discuss the employee’s career development and future with the company. Unfortunately, this time rarely happens.

Assuming the review is a favorable one, begin discussing future opportunities and career direction right then.

Side-bar

Tips for delivering performance reviews

Make the delivery of the performance review a more positive experience for employees.

Give employees ample notice of the time and date you will be delivering their performance review so that they have time to prepare.

Meet in a quiet place that is private. Remember to turn the ringer off of your phone so that you are not interrupted during your meeting.

Tell the employee how the meeting will be run.

Give the employee a written copy of the review.

Allow the employee ample time to respond to the review.

With a little bit of practice and some training, your managers will exceed expectations when it comes to delivering performance reviews.

Effective Offline Promotion

Although, most of your traffic will still come from search
engines and various online promotions, a little effort using
traditional media might also bring a large number of visitors
to your website.

Reasons, why you should take offline promotion of your website
seriously include:

Internet is increasingly becoming a part of our daily life.
However, still a big segment of the society - especially, the
elderly - don’t spend that much of time online. Traditional
media is a good method of getting their attention.

If a person sees your printed advertisement with your URL in
a year-old magazine and gets interested in what you have to
offer, he will still be able to check out your website.
Research shows that at least four people browse through
a printed magazine in its life time.

With planned media promotion, you can tap into particular
target market, which otherwise might not be that easy to do.
For example: if you sell car accessories through your website,
a good promotional channel would be a specific radio station
that commuters like to tune in.

Your offline promotion endeavor should combine advertisement,
publicity and promotional items.

Advertising

Once you identified the potential target market that you would
like to reach, you can try to communicate with them using
various advertising methods. Advertising is a paid form of
delivering message to broad range of prospective customers
through billboards, posters, print, broadcast media, etc.

Each of your advertising campaign should have a clear goal
and carefully crafted plan. Since advertising in some media
forms is quite expensive, without a well-defined plan you
might waste your money for nothing.

Your advertising goal might include the followings:

- Bring targeted traffic to your website

- Stimulate sales

- Build brand recognition of your website

- Increase public awareness of your product and services

- Promote seasonal sales, clearance, etc. conducted through

your site.

Once you established your advertising goal, you need to clarify
advertising budget, timing and media. You should set your
advertising budget based on your objective. In general,
companies set aside a percentage of their gross sales as
promotional budget. A new online business might choose to
spend on advertising, amount allocated in its business plan.
Timing and scheduling are also crucial factors in advertising.

Where should you advertise is a difficult decision, which should
base on a number of factors:

Market reach
What is the market segment you would like to cover with your
present campaign?

Message
Depending on your goal, you have to choose the right message to
communicate with your prospective customers. The advertising
media has to conform to the selected message.

Product and service that you offer through your site
B2B and B2C products and services are usually different in
nature and require different media to reach targeted market.

Budget
The choice of media depends vastly on your budget consideration.

Major offline advertising mediums

Newspapers

Newspapers are very popular media forms of advertising. If you
are not planning to reach out to the mass, classified sections
of local newspapers should be your first choice.

Magazines

Specialized magazines are good for targeting particular interest
group. If you sell golf accessories through your site, you
should definitely consider advertising in one of the local golf
magazines. However, ad spaces in magazines are often quite
expensive.

Radio

Radio advertising is a good option, if your business is aimed at
certain social group like teenagers, housewives, drivers, etc.
This is also a relatively inexpensive way of delivering your
message to a certain community or locality.

Television

If the products or services that you offer have mass appeal,
television is an excellent media of advertising. As the audience
of a TV station changes depending on the show aired there is
a limited possibility of target marketing. The ability to use
audio visual scenes helps delivering certain types of message
to the audience more clearly than any other media, which makes
TV advertising highly effective but quite costly.

Yellow pages and other directories

You should definitely add your business along with your website
URL to as many printed directories as you can. Industry
specific directories are good advertising media for B2B
businesses.

Outdoor Advertising

Outdoor advertising with billboards, posters, etc. are effective
way of reaching out to a certain neighborhood. Since the
exposure rate of billboards is very high - people often take
the same route to work, it is a great medium to create brand
recognition.

Transit advertising

Advertising on various transports, terminals, subway are known
as transit advertising. Like billboards with this type of
advertising you can target a specific route or area. This can
be a very effective way to get your message to blue-collar
workers, if that is your market segment.

Direct Mail

Excellent way of delivering you message in the form of
promotional letters, catalogs, flyers, circulars, coupons, etc.
to your prospective customers. If you choose your mailing list
correct, the exposure rate and the response rate can be very
high.

Publicity

Publicity is any form of presentation of ideas, products, or
services delivered by the media themselves rather than as a paid
advertisement.
If your website carries a really new message or unique and
innovative products or services, for you publicity will be
definitely more effective than advertising. People, often, trust
news stories and articles much more than they trust paid
advertisements.

Press release

Newspapers, magazines, TV and Radio are the main publicity
conduits. Press releases are the tool to get into these media.
Whenever, you do something with your online business, which you
think is newsworthy you should write a press release and send it
off.

The main idea of a press release is to grab attention from a
news editor so that he writes a story on the subject.

That’s why follow the following rules while writing a press
release:

- Keep it simple, clear and precise

- Be accurate in facts and figures

- The news highlights should be expressed in the first two

paragraphs

- The press release should have an eye-catching headline

- Tell your story from different perspective

- The press release should have less than 200 words

- Mention your website URL at least in two different places

Business material and stationery

All your business literatures, materials and stationery should
have similar consistent logotype and URL address. This is an
extremely effective brand creation method within the group of
people those, who one way or another, interact with your
business.

Promotional Items

Give away items such as Pens, coffee mugs, key chains, coasters,
calendars, sticky notes, etc. should have your company logo and
web address. Apart from building brand this also work as a daily
reminder for users of these items.
