The USA has much more to offer the tourist than guaranteed sunshine and bargain shopping, and there’s a relatively unknown way to discover what this country is really all about. Trains also have traditional sleeping cars with cosy bedrooms ranging from single ‘roomettes’ to family size affairs for those travelling with children. Accommodation includes breakfast, lunch and dinner in the dining car, as well as complimentary tea or coffee and a newspaper delivered each morning. Meals are of a high standard, including regional specials such as freshly caught trout or barbecued spare ribs. Video films of recent vintage are shown in the lounge bar during the evenings, when the place becomes lively with impromptu parties and poker games.

The atmosphere on board is invariably relaxed and the modest speed perfect for sightseeing, so this is a great way to explore the landscape and meet the natives. You have room to stretch out or walk around and instead of racing above the clouds you can watch an entire continent unroll outside the wraparound windows. Even occasional glimpses of city backyards can be fascinating, although trains are scheduled to pass through the less prepossessing areas by night. Children are particularly well catered for with games and other amusements and rarely become bored with the thrill of riding the tracks and making new friends.

Chance encounters are a vital part of what makes American train journeys such a rewarding experience. One day it may be a group of Italian schoolgirls heading for Niagara Falls, the next it is Australian backpackers in Texas. US trains are friendly places and you’re sure to run into someone interesting. You can learn a lot by sitting next to a Kansas City mortician or a drag artist on her way to entertain the troops in San Diego. Between small towns and big cities you also experience the country’s sheer size and variety, getting a feel for what this land must have been like before the days of McDonalds and Coca Cola.

Low prices

Best of all, ticket prices are amazingly low and visitors from overseas benefit from an array of passes that make this one of the world’s great travel bargains. You can stop off en route as often as you wish and for any length of time, so given a little planning you should find a train to take you almost everywhere you want to go, and perhaps to a few places you hadn’t expected. It’s easy to work out an itinerary that lets you see more of this diverse country in a short time than is possible any other way. And as the bell clangs and the conductor calls out ‘All aboard!’ you soon discover why the railroad experience is so delightfully addictive.

However, if you’re willing to accept these higher costs, you may be able to get approved for a credit card.

Think small!

Store or retail credit cards–like department store cards and gas cards–tend to have more lenient criteria for borrowers. So even if you can’t get approved for a major credit card, you may be able to get a store card. And if you use it wisely by charging only what you can afford and making regular payments, it can help you build up your credit again until you qualify for a major credit card.

Now, the committee has decided that the junk food and soda has to be taken out of the schools. All I can say to that is a big, fat resounding: Duh!?

Our bodies are made for moving. If they don’t move, our muscles get sluggish, our cells get rundown and we store fat easily. Indeed, it is all too easy to spot a “mover” from the “sitter”!

But, there is hope. Don’t despair. Don’t give up! Instead of wallowing in the negatives of inactivity and poor eating habits, let’s look at changing our perspective and our attitudes.

How about scheduling some fun outdoor activities this summer as a family? What about an all-day hike with a nutritious picnic lunch? Remember family softball games? How about playing a game of catch in the back yard?

Most every community offers a variety of summer activities, such as softball, soccer, swimming and community runs. Even cleaning up the roadside is a productive event in which the whole family can participate. And what about all the wonderful bike trails in Anchorage and the Valley? Make a date with your loved ones and walk or bike a mile or two daily. As you get fitter, you’ll only want to go furtherdo it!

Closer to home, you can make it a game to see how many steps each person takes during the day. Kids are mirrors of their parents, and often follow by example. If a parent is active and involved in activities, the kids will be too! Lead by example.

Yet another area in which obesity can be addressed is summed up in the old adage, you are what you eat. It’s important to move away from all those ready-to-eat processed foods which contain almost no nutritional value (and are actually breaking the body down) and head instead to fresh, healthy foods.

Educate yourself along with your kids to discover which foods honor your body and give you energy. When you choose foods that are healthy and nutritious, you’ll have more energy and will want to move your body.

The combination of the right foods, water, and movement will get you to your ideal weight, rid you of joint pain, increase your energy, and eliminate other health concerns. Not only that, your kids will be well on their way to becoming happy, healthy adults.

A person cannot change what they do not acknowledge. So, if you can acknowledge that if you live life passively, the devil will destroy you.

He is not just going to sit by and watch as you become outrageously blessed. The reason is because he hates God. And, since he can not hinder God in any way, the best he can do is hinder God’s most beloved possession - you!

As Christians, we are just passing through and we must be like Jesus, completely focused on our mission. And, that mission is pursuing the purpose God put in each of us. Too many Christians are confused because they do not have a clue as to why they are here.

You must absolutely know where you are headed in life and have a fixed goal in view before you’ll ever attain what you’re after.

You must be definite on what it is that you desire and not consistently changing your mind according to your moods on any given day. James 1:6-8 says, “Let him ask in faith with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. Let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord, for he is a double-minded man, and unstable in all his ways.”

Many people go through the lip-service act of saying their prayers without the slightest belief that those prayers will be answered. Consequently, they are not answered, and the same people will scratch their head and wonder why God is not answering their prayers.

Jesus said, “According to your faith, let it be done unto you” (Matt 9:29). How can anything positive “be done unto you” if you are not exercising your faith in what you desire?

If you’re frustrated and tired of going around the same mountain of problems day after day, then ask yourself some serious questions:

1) “Do I know God’s will for my life, or do I not have a clue what He’s created me for?”

2) “Do I have direction, or am I just wandering around aimlessly?”

3) “Do I know exactly what I want and how I’m going to get there, or do I just wait and see what’s going to happen?”

4) “Do I have goals, and if so, are they written down?”

5) “Am I confessing what God’s Word says about me daily, or do I even know any of God’s Word?”

You are created with a purpose! You may say, “I know, but I don’t know what my purpose is.” If that’s what you are saying, the devil has successfully faked you out.

God has a purpose for each person and I believe your purpose is in your interests! You will never be ultimately successful doing something you do not enjoy.

Is your work “just a job,” or do you truly enjoy it? Ecclesiastes 2:24 says, “Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor.”

So, ask yourself what it is that you like to do? Once you discover it, then do it with all your might. Ecclesiastes 9:10 says, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.”

It is vital that you know God’s will for your life. Things that are not God’s will for you get frustrating. They don’t manifest positive results because they are not part of God’s plan. In those cases you must be honest with yourself and stop pursuing those things.

But, if you know with all your heart that God has spoken something to you, then you must pursue it with everything you’ve got.

Now, you will only be able to pursue it with everything you’ve got by first controlling and directing your thoughts.

It’s a decision you make concerning what you think about. So whether you think success, or failure, that’s what you will eventually reap. Without directed thought aimed at your purpose, and goals in writing, you are like the proverbial “ship without a rudder,” wandering everywhere while going nowhere (remember James 1:6-8).

Because our thoughts are vibrating energy, we create what we want by focusing our thoughts on those things. So, a big mistake is trying to figure out how you are going to do something before you do it. Start by believing you can do it and the “how-to” will follow, for strong belief triggers the mind to figuring the ways and the means.

Now, faith without works is dead (James 2:20). You’re simply not committed until you take action. Think positive thoughts, come up with ideas, seek advice from Godly people who are on the same page, spend time with God and seek His council.

Within you right now is the power to do things you never dreamed possible. This power becomes available to you just as soon as you change your beliefs by eliminating thoughts of limitation, incapacity, and unworthiness. Remember, you do not get want you want, but what you picture.
